Hotels in Malpais
The majority of the hotels are located towards the northern part of Mal Pais, where the white sand beach of Playa Carmen offers one of the best surf spots in the area. Here you also find the Malpais Surf Camp. It was one of the first hotels to be built in the Mal Pais area, and a pioneer to bring surf culture to Costa Rica.
In the southern part of Mal Pais is the village center and the fishing port. There aren’t any shops or tourist services, only a scattering of houses and a small small grocery store for the locals. Along the beach it’s however just a 40 minutes walk by foot to the commercial center of Santa Teresa.
Hotels in Malpais are generally very tranquil and laid back. They are spread out and surrounded by large patches of nature where monkeys travel through the canopy and iguanas bask in the sun. Some lodgings boast great ocean and sunset views, while others are close to the beach.
Surprisingly Mal Pais was the first community in Costa Rica where glass fibre cables for digital services were installed. In February 2017 the first houses and hotels in Mal Pais received TV, phone and internet with up to 100 Mbit/sec. You can kick back in the midst of the jungle, with monkeys and birds as your only neighbors while staying connected to your office or family at home via high speed Wifi.
The closeness to Cabo Blanco National Park is a big advantage of staying in Malpais. A plethora of activities is offered, from nature tours to thrilling sports. On the beach you can often watch crowds of water birds, and the forests around are teeming with wildlife.
Tucked into hillsides and jungle are vacation rentals and boutique hotels offering romantic getaways for the most discriminating travelers. Nature lovers and tranquility seekers will also find eco lodges, some boasting their own nature reserve and trails through the jungle.
